Hello everyone! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I'm Patricia Young, The Fashion Theory Lab's owner and educational and creative director. Fashion isn't just my passion; it's my life's work. With a career spanning over three decades in education, fashion merchandising, and business, I've dedicated myself to not just the surface of fashion, but to understanding and sharing its intricacies.
My journey began in Huntsville, Alabama, a city known for its contributions to space exploration, not fashion. But I was determined to carve out my place in the industry. I have an A.S, B.S., and M.S. in Retail Merchandising and Apparel, Merchandising and Design, and a J.D. (law degree). My academic goal was to pursue every opportunity to deepen my knowledge and expertise.
I spent 15 years working with renowned fashion brands like Parisian Department Store and The Limited Company, etc. This hands-on experience, dealing with Ready-To-Wear and Consumer Aspects of clothing, as well as clothing construction, laid a solid foundation for my career.
I transitioned to higher education becoming an Assistant Professor and Area Coordinator specializing in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design. Here, I further developed my expertise in Fashion and Retail Merchandising, Visual Merchandising, and Consumer Textiles for Fashion. My passion for empowering was evident in my teaching, academic advising and mentoring of students.
Beyond my formal education, which includes additional studies in Business Administration and Clothing and Textiles, I've earned certifications as a Fundraising Manager (CFRM) and a licensed Real Estate Agent. My involvement with organizations like the International Textiles and Apparel Association, the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, and the National Association of African-American Studies underscores my commitment to professional excellence.
I've been honored by the prestigious national honor societies Kappa Omicron Nu and Kappa Delta Pi. I'm also a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church and a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which reflects my dedication to community service and social responsibility.
